not sure I get it? using one light - F22 - and the edges all go black? all the edges or just the sides in your pic? in his closeups it's all around, like a vignette - or did you crop yours?

It's all to do with the way the light drastically falls off after a couple of feet. Quite a clever technique. You can get the effect I did above in broad daylight.

I used ISO200, 1/100 at f/22 and full power on my 600EX in my largest softbox about 1ft from the car. It basically comes out of camera like my picture.

You ar basically shutting down the ambient light and taking Advantage of the fact that the closer the light source is close to the subject the faster the fall off of the light.
