Ok, thanks. Do you find 20 seconds is the longest before you get star trails? I'm surprised you didn't get any noise at iso3200. I tried a few a couple of astro type shots the other night and the shots with iso of 640 or higher were really noisy. To be fair I was in my back garden and the problem could possibly have been light pollution from nearby street lights? Was your picture taken somewhere with zero light pollution? Sorry for all the questions, but any help/guidance would be appreciated!!! Thanks

At 17mm I find 20" is the longest before slight star trails. If you were to have a UWA and be shooting at 10mm then you could go as high as 30" before you would really see it.

there is some noise at 3200 ISO but you can either shoot with high ISO noise reduction (I would recommend) and/or remove it in post. I didnt use high ISO noise reduction, I instead removed it in Lightroom 4 and shooting at F2.8 really helps.

Yes I was in an area with no light pollution at all and I was also at about 4500 feet elevation. I use http://www.jshine.net/astronomy/dark_sky/ (external link) It will show you were the least light pollution is

A shot I took while slightly moving the camera during the exposure to get an atmospheric effect of the forest.
