Wow very tempting

I am looking at pancake for walkaround to spplement 24-105. How good is contrast and color of pancake (say with respect to 24-70)

It's not L glass, but it's DANG close. contrast and colors are great, but the sharpness is where this lens REALLY excels. with such thin and few elements, this is easily sharper than my 35L or any 50L i've ever shot at 2.8.

5DII, 7D, 20-35 2.8L, 35L, 40 Pancake, 50 1.4, 85 1.8, 135 2.0L, 300 f/4L IS, 580EXII, Alien Bees, Bags & Bags & More Bags.

How would you say the quality control is on this lens. Most reviews are good, but one Amazon review that stuck in my mind mentioned some disappointment. Basically the lens was fine, she just wasn't wowed! She decided to exchange it and she was blown away. Again, no noticeable problems, just wasn't impressed. Anyone else feel that way about this lens? I'm on the fence. I have some great images, some that just ho-hum.

When you nail a shot with it, it's really, really good considering the price/build etc.. I mean - I'd certainly rather have this lens than the 50mm 1.8 for image quality.

My main complaint is that it hunts - really badly. Sometimes it's unusable in light conditions that really shouldn't be hard for it to find a lock. Outside in decent daylight it's fine but anything with slightly lower light levels it has problems where other lenses wouldn't..

Any time you need to bump the ISO to beyond 6400, I'd say that the 40 isn't one I'd want on the front of the cam. It hunts (and fails) in very low light. I tried it at a concert once, and I will never use it again for that type of shooting.

That said, in most all other situations where light is decent, than, yes, it is an absolute amazing little piece of glass. For the money, the best bang for the buck I've ever spent for a lens. Really wish it had a red stripe around it.

Are you implying you wish you had paid a lot more for it? :)

Just bought the 40mm pancake. Good build, good AF, super small, great IQ and cheap as chips :)

A ring shot from last weekend's wedding. I used extension tubes, not sure which combo as I was switching them quite often.
