Are you trying to use EOS Utility or just download the photos off the camera? A more specific description of the problem will help the community provide better answers.

I use an 8 year old 5D and Windows 8 recognized it the first time I plugged it in. I just download photos, though. I am not trying to get EOS Utility or tethered shooting to work.

Head Smack!! I forgot about card readers. My 5D uses CF cards and my WIN8 laptop only has an SD reader built in. I HAVE to use the USB cable, and it works fine for downloading the photos into LR4.

Hi,

I am at the moment trying to download "Raw" images from my 450d onto the computer using EOS utility but all the options are grayed out except "monitor folder". If I put the card in the card reader slot it says ,must convert to JPEG. This used to work with windows xp and will work on my windows 7 laptop, so why not windows 8, do I need extra drivers??

Dave.

If you have loaded the Canon software, try importing your photos with ZoomBrowser EX instead of EOS Utility. I use Lightroom and never had any problems with WIN8 using either the card reader for SD, or plugging the 5D directly into a USB port.

Which program is throwing the 'must convert to JPG' error? I've never heard of that one.

Give this a try and see if it helps...

If you have not already updated I would also go to Canon's website and update to EOS Utility 2.13.21
