Hi Brenda - regarding sliders not at -zero- after import, two things come to mind. One is that in the 'Details' Panel of the Develop Module - sharpening and NR do have a few default levels to begin with. I can't readily remember any other items where Lr sets a default.

The other thing is - perhaps you have an import preset enabled... that is what I do.

To see if there was an import preset - click on an image in the Library - go into the develop module - and on the left side scroll down to the History and look at the first item in the History - which should be 'Import'. If there are words following the word "Import" - it is an import preset.

I do have a user preset on import but I only set it for sharpening settings and lens corrections. The exposure is all over the charts. Is LR saying "Hey, this shot is underexposed by .5"? or something like that?

In other minor life frustrations....I've gotten myself and my files all kerfuddled with switching from lr3 to lr5 in the midst of a couple of shoots. I need to write down my work flow and follow a check list ...at least for now and until I make a good habit.

Here's a shot I decided to try while camping the other night. Didn't turn out exactly the way I wanted, but then again it was a informal shoot at 3:30 in the morning with a headlamp and fairly intoxicated photographer.

regarding the preset, I think you may have had other settings adjusted when you made the preset.... To fix:

Then on the left go to the preset (user preset?) and right click - and choose 'update preset'. If a window comes up with all sorts of things to choose - ensure that only sharpening and lens corrections are chosen. Click ok.

Thanks, I updated my preset. I'll keep an eye out for my next import to see if that's the fix.

ah... perhaps you are referring to Catalogs...

not sure if this helps but I melded all my Catalogs together and just use one Catalog, as per advice from "Adobe Lightroom Evangelist Julieanne Kost"

No. I melded my catalogs. I actually had a double import of some files due to the switch over and me not clearing my SD card. I have it fixed now. Just have some files not exactly in the same structure that I was using before, but that's OK.

However, I still am wondering about the export process. When I export I put the jpegs to a subfolder "lr" but am I not able to see those files in LR without importing? I wanted to print a contact sheet of the files that I had exported. Just wrapping my head around this. I appreciate all the help!

when we export it usually means that jpeg (or tiff, PSD, etc) is intended to be published on the web or ready for print so it does not show up in the Catalog.

That said, on the top of the export dialog window (Export Location) - we do have the choice to add the exported image to the catalog if we wish. I found that confusing if choosing that option... does this help answer your question?

Thanks Will! I think I could have taken 1st in landscape last year, but I didn't have it printed nicely and kind of threw the rules of thirds out the door, but that was all part of the rules. I took 3rd in landscape and peoples choice, so this year I want to try and at least place. I have a friend that can print and frame like nobody's business now, so that will help plus I have a better understanding of the requirements of what the judges are looking for.
