If you're not against an older body, I recently got a Japanese 350D for $99 shipped on eBay.

With the 70D shipping, the Mongol hordes are selling off their 60Ds for relatively cheap prices, since the camera shops/online sellers are blowing them out the door for $600 new.

Just a thought to throw in the mix.

PS: mine isn't for sale. ;)

40d, 50d, t3i should fit under your budget

many would be willing to part with their older Rebel, 50D, etc
plenty of pickings for $400 used

I see a couple 20D's going for <$200 and 40D's ~$350 a lot. If you aren't in a rush, I think waiting will get you a nice deal :D

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I'm doing some checking on the Ti series to see if I want to go to a smaller body or not. It would be nice to cut the size a bit for hauling around on mountain trails on my bike but also want to expect good quality.

If you can afford $400 you can go for $599. Right now B&H is offering the 60D (new USA) with a
Sandisk 16 GB card Canon camera bag plus extra aftermarket battery for $599 with free shipping.
On top of that you get 2% buyers reward ($11.98) why chase something used when you can have a
deal like this.

How about a T2i? You can probably get one with the kit lens for around $400.

40D's can be had in good condition for about $240-260.

There is no better value out there.

sizewise the sl1 looks great for traveling light with a dslr. Just a little outta range though. 40D sounds like what you want

After a long delay I went and bought an EOS M with an 22 mm f2.0 with the Canon adapter from B&H. OK it's not used but I could not be happier and stayed close to my budget! This is an amazing well made camera and I can use all my lenses with the adapter. My main criteria was something that I can take mountain biking without being a major pain and this certainly fits the bill. The 22 mm f2.0 lens I think is very sharp and is very small and light.

The other cool think is I was about to ditch my 50 mm f1.4 lens since I never used it but now I have a reason to keep it as it makes a nice smallish compliment to my M giving me an f1.4 80 mm portrait lens. For me the M focuses fine although there is a delay when the shutter is pressed but will be very acceptable for a light highly portable unit.
