If you want a quick jump on understanding light placement, get the book Pro Digital Portrait Lighting by Peter Hince. It has over 200 pages of different lighting setups, It shows placement of light and photo results for 4 different skin types. The chapters cover 1 & 2 light setups along with more including modifiers
