rank your priorities then ask the question. It makes all the difference.

ISO is your biggest concern correct? because of the crappy lighting in the stadiums you shoot at. The 6D is expandable to 102,400, the 70D to 25,600, so 40% more light getting to the sensor in terms of sensitivity. I can tell you, after upgrading to 5D3 recently, that the improvements in noise reduction in the newer Canons are astounding! I think both would be a major major upgrade for you and keep you happy regardless of which one you choose

you focus well, so this is less important right? both will be a MAJOR upgrade from your 40D so no worries there (though do love the dual AF with phase detection and f/2.8 ability in the 70d)

fps is important, but how much? More important than autofocus? probably not ISO though. 70D is 7 fps, 6D is 4.5 fps I believe

reach: do you have problems with reach now? The 6D will decrease that reach, is that ok, really? is it ok? are you sure? If you ever wish for more reach with your current set up then I don't think moving to a full frame is such a good idea

just rank your priorities. #1 I am sure is ISO where the 6D trumps the 70d, at almost twice the price. 70D in terms of focus, fps, reach either match the 6D pretty well or exceed it.

going to a 70D would give you about 1.8x better light sensitivity than your current 40D has, and better noise reduction to boot. Going to the 6D would only give you about 40% more light sensitivity over the 70D but with barely half the fps, 40% less reach, possibly inferior AF (for sports action) and twice the price............you fill in the blank

ok, I talked myself into it. Pat, just buy the 70D now, NOW, so you can learn it before the brunt of football season get here

Great shots guys! I'm dying to get the chance to shoot some games but I'm not sure how many I'll be able to do.

Pat just an fyi on my desk from my 7d to my 1d. I really miss the reach I had with my 7d. Just going from a 1.6 crop to a 1.3 was enough to miss my 7d. Don't go ff unless you get some serious lenses to maintain reach.
