squirl033, what time did you go there so the milky way was visible? is the road going up to artist point paved?
thanks :)

i actually went up there before dark, and spent the night in the back of my car in the parking lot... got up about 1:30 and started shooting at about 1:45 AM.

the road's paved all the way to the top, where there's ample parking and a restroom. the road is only open a few months out of the year, though, it usually closes sometime in late September or early October due to snow.

My first try at Milky Way shooting over the weekend. I'm pleased, but thinking maybe I can tweak this further. Or maybe it was just too early (10-ish), but clouds and moon came in shortly after.

I'd be satisfied with this, good capture especially on your first try.

I've just been out and drove into the countryside to try to find some darker sky and came up with this one.

Drop your ISO to about 2400 - 3200 and see if that produces alot better .

I'm not trying to be disrespectful, but instead offer some insight because I own the same camera and lens. I would have to disagree with the recommendation of 2400-3200 ISO with the EF 24-105mm lens. The lens isn't fast enough to bring out the detail in the Milky Way at F/4. Instead, shoot at 6400 ISO which is a fair compromise. Take it from me I have the same lens and have tried all ISOs up to 12,800. I hope this helps.

Smoke cleared up and went out for some star pics before the smoke blanketed us again.

The Rim Fire north of Yosemite is visible from my favorite night photography locations. I'm about 50 miles north of the fire.
