Thanks Sarah!
I know how to set them up that way. I done it before and might switch back to it.
What I really want is to separate blogging as a drop down menu like my portfolio.

I am using zenfolio and I have a premium account. I really like it.... but since I don't really sell prints I don't think it is worth it for me. I am considering a wordpress site when my year is up. We will see though.

I go both ways with this part of the conversation. I really like customizing, but I also want to not spend hours messing with my design. I do feel that the look at zenfolio is getting a little stale.

They are promissing to release an update "within weeks not months" here are 2 sneak peeks that show some of the final product possibilities.

That is great news for Zen users, however - the "end "result" is still misleading.
Can an average joe get that result within the confines of Zenfolios stock tools, or is that done by hiring someone who knows the ins and outs Zenfolios coding?

How is it misleading, when the designs, and the system to impliment those designs has not even been released yet. Maybe they are stock, much like they are now, and they will be easy to implement (which likely will limit somewhat customization). Or maybe they will be like smugmug which can do anything, especially if you are a expert professional developer getting paid to design the site.

The reality is at the moment there is no way to answer the question UNTIL it is actually released. They said weeks, not months, and right now they are 2 weeks out from saying that. I would anticipate a downtime and upgrade in the next 2 weeks if they were telling the truth... though admittedly that is wishful thinking.

Zenfolio has rolled out the first part of their upgrades. The main home page options, and ease of use looks great. I love it. I managed to convert my existing layout to the new one, with no programming, not a single line of code, in less than 45 minutes.

Check it out. http://www.towpathphoto.com (external link)

That all being said, I am hoping that this is the first stage of the roll out. The gallery pages are still a bit stale. But this give me hope.

Thank guys. I'm definitely going with Zen but I think I'll wait until their upgrade is complete before I do.

Just had a chance to read through your thread, and will add my name to the list of those happy with Zenfolio...been great for letting customers purchase mainly photos from sporting events - now with these upgrades it's going to really help to showcase the photos better.

I really enjoy my zenfolio account. It's not that expensive, and I was able to make custom theme to add to all my pages so they're all uniform except for where I didn't want it to. Did it take a little time to do the custom theme? Yes, a few hours, but I'm happy with the end result.

Keep in mind I wanted a simple and sleek design and zenfolio allowed me to do it. Take a look if you'd like here (external link).

I've thought about going to a wordpress site but I just don't have as much free time to sit and design the entire site on there.

Thanks guys. Right now I primarily shoot for family and friends. Many have asked for copies of my images (digital or print). I have my Flickr account set for 'family and friends' only so not to many strangers see my images. It's looking like Zen will serve my needs better and can eventually grow into a 'business' site for me. Thanks again.

Are you giving away the images for free? If so, it will be hard to charge in the future. If it's not Moms or Pops, charge something other than free.

Btw, I use Zenfolio and like, although I need to do some cleanup work to make my site better. This comment may be too late, but I thought I comment anyway.

^^^^^^^
Thanks for the advice. It's my understanding that by using Access Controls I can limit who sees which folders. Then 'free' images can go in one folder and charge for 'public' folders. I think I can set up different prices per folder when I move into 'selling'. I intend to start with a 'basic' account and then grow.

I'm waiting for their update to the site to be complete before I sign up. I understand the update has started so it should not be long now.
