I have been shooting with a 5DIII for a pretty good while. I have really gotten more into Macro than anything else. I am seriously thinking about selling the 5DIII and getting a 7D. For those that have experience; I am wondering if having the 5DIII has any advantage over the 7D for Macro. I do shoot other stuff but, not much anymore. Any input would be great.

eIMHO, you are complete and totally insane. Send my your 5DIII immediately. I will buy you a gripped 7D and the 100 2.8L macro. What the hay, I'll pay for all the shipping, too.

Dedicated APS-c shooter. Gripped 60D, 60 2.8, 10-22, 15-85, Σ70-200 OS and a big white something or other! Plus a 5D w/28-75.

Keep the 5DIII, there isn't a day that I'm unhappy with selling my 7D.

Would you like to buy a vowel?

For macro, I would especially want he full frame goodness of the III. The additional DOF and magnification of the crop don't amount to much IMHO.

+1!

What do you hope to gain? Reach?

You will loose about 40% in sharpness, you will have a thinner depth of field (since you probably will not be worried for equivalent framing) and you will get the notorious 7D anti-alliasing filter which requires extra sharpening.

Crop format has its place (BIF, sports) when 'reach' is at a premium.

I am not saying you can't shoot macro with a crop, of course you can, but the 5D3 in my opinion is much better suited.

YMMV
