All the shots I took at this concert were with the SX50: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1326970, but I don't think it's appropriate to post them a 2nd time.

Dang archer! Those came out great! Just great man! The exif read 1600 and I think the noise handling looks remarkably well....

Also, the shot showing how far back you were really helps with perspective of the zoom.. Great stuff!

Yes, I was really surprised with its performance in low light. I already knew it was good in good light, but wasn't sure about dimmer lighting. The IS is amazing on this camera!

Great shots Cody.

AP DPP works very well with this camera. Use the unsharp mask to get the best out of your photos. I also found you can reduce both noise reductions by 2 without much problem.

Like 2n10, I turned off the digital zoom after using it for a few days just to try it. 50x optical (out to 1200mm FF equivalent) is plenty for my needs. The noise is a function of ISO, exposure time, and sensor temperature. Boosting the brightness will make the noise show more as well.

Does this camera have 50x optical? I thought it was 50x in total or am I reading/understanding something wrong?

My S3IS has 12x Optical but 48X in total with digital turned on,I think.

I went searching and found a spec on the SX50,I presume you all know this but for those that do not, these are the numbers......

Optical 50x.
ZoomPlus 100x
Digital Approx. 4x (with Digital Tele-Converter Approx. 1.5x or 2.0x and Safety Zoom¹). Combined Approx. 200x

BTW,,,what's Safety Zoom??????????

Now I have to send my wife back to the Casino to win me some money to buy the SX50 or maybe the SX60,,,,,,,,,and I can't even take a good picture and don't understand all the settings and why's & wherefor's.

It's 50x optical all the time, plus 4x digital when you're in green box mode (or possibly whenever you're saving as .jpg). You can't do the additional digital zoom in Av, Tv or M. Plus you don't get the 4x digital in the raw files, only the .jpgs. Like I said, I turned off the digital zoom. If I want more, I'll just crop the raws.

50X optical will give you an effective 1200mm. I would recommend turning off the digital zoom and cropping in post if you really need to zoom further (really, 1200mm is not enough? ;)).

Gear List

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Sometimes, it's not! I have plenty of times that I want much more focal length when doing astrophotography!
