first senior shoot ive ever done.. im sure theres lots of places to improve... all these where shot with either my DIY 22in beauty dish or my octo box.. let me know what you think

Really liking the first one! Different angle...at first thought it was a little distracting...but it's growing on me.

Did you do anything with the eyes? Maybe it's her contacts but they appear a little overdone.

My first post in the Senior threads......your an intimidating bunch!
Here's a few of my latest senior, Ashley. I have so far to go.......

Comments, suggestions appreciated!

Thanks,
Ray

Looking good Ray. The second one could be a bit warmer...she looks paler in that one as compared to the others. I like the lighting in one...not sure about the partial smile...you nailed the lens flare in the last one...great job.

Just my take on them.

My counts have dropped over the past 3 yrs. Big time this year. Too many are doing it,, Too many are teaching it to newbs, and the ones that are teaching it are lying out their teeth about the market. Its saturated as bad as the baby market. If you can get a school contract you can do well. But the ones that have them pay nice kickbacks to get them....The senior market is not easy and full of people who are weekend warriors. I know many that are no longer in business........sorry to burst the bubble....Just a fact

Yea that is the truth. To many people are doing it under the illusion that one can easily learn it and you make great money doing it. Easy job , great illusion . Would advice the OP to improve his family business and right now
not many of us can say they are making a killing.

Ever wonder if it is so easy to make money why are so many people trying to earn a living by teaching what they know.

I've followed this thread on and off for awhile and I have to say there are some really great photographers in here. It's also nice to see so many sharing information.

Here are a few from a recent shoot of ours. Kind of a different look for these from a "normal" style shoot I guess. We were lucky enough to get into the gym for a about 45 minutes and we wanted to do something dramatic and fun for them.

This, and I have to assume it's happening everywhere, has been going on for several years in our area. Most come and go. After they do their friends they find out there is little demand even when free. One or two might make it every two or three years. But the ones that make are in fact good and invest in them selves as well as equipment. And I will say there are less then a handful that do photography as their sole source of income. In my immediate area there are only three of us that have studios...and as far as seniors go...so far this year only about 3% of my senior clients request studio sessions.

My point here is just to say, don't try to compete with the $100 session that comes with images on a CD with print rights. They are all shooting ambient and producing sub-par images. The individuals that are using these services should not be your targeted audience. Instead find your style that sperates you from the others and stick to it...and if you can make a living from it you're doing better then 60% of the working photographers out there. Senior photography is clearly low hanging fruit. You'll need to have expertise in other fields of photography to have any hope of making a living from photography alone. To say it is easy to make a living at photography is naive. Just my take on it.

A couple from last night. Working with both of these girls from one of our local schools. They are Juniors right now but I photographed both of their brothers so we will be using them in a Rep type role for their school. Gonna start early with them because we have some stuff planned over the the next 6-7 months. Should be fun. We had really rappy light last night:mad:

Really hoping for some comments on this one. Her mom really wanted it done and likes it but I'm just not feeling it. I guess what really matters is what mom wants to pay for so I'm good with that but what do you guys/gals think?

^^^ RJHarris,

on the next one you do like this, put her arms in a different place.

this pose is a standard pose i use because it helps opens the eye a little and puts you the shooter up higher or top down position.

the back hand should be up near her neck or holding necklace or hair.
the front hand should be on her belly area - flat hands on the belly or something to this effect..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/-phamster-/6612492183/ (external link) <- example of what i am saying

over all i like the image, and as you said mothers are the ones paying so it is all good..

Great advice, Pham. I said the same thing to myself when I saw the image "Nice image. I wish her hands were doing something else."
