Well, pretty obvious isn't it? They don't want to name something that will confuse people into thinking it's a 3D camera.

I don't think that would stop them. I've had people tell me their iPhone 4 has 4G. Most people don't read the fine print, just the carefully worded marketing material, starting with the name.

apple set the precedent for stupid naming early.

iphone 1: iphone
iphone 2: iphone 3g
iphone 3: iphone 3gs
iphone 4: iphone 4
iphone 5: iphone 4s
iphone 6: iphone 5
iphone 7: iphone 5s

I thought the S versions are just minor updates kind of like the difference between T4i and T5i or even better ef-s 18-55 IS and 18-55 IS II... and I am sure there are people out there who wouldnt hesitate to upgrade to the latest even if the main difference is just the name

No they're completely separate updates. I mean each iphone update has been as significant as the last, which is to say, not very.

If that were the case and 3gs was just a minor update, then the iphone 4 would have been called the iphone 3. Which would have been really confusing.

If you think iPhone naming is confusing then you should check out intel and their Core cpus :D

I can see why Canon gave the body-swerve to G13 with its connotation of bad luck, but why no G14? And I guess G8 had associations with an annual head-of-state economic beano. But who knows?

How about a 4D? The Japanese don't like the number 4 because of the pronunciation "shi", which is the same pronunciation as death.*

This rumor got squashed a long time ago, then Canon announced the 6D. Why are we bring up the 3D again?

I joke that since my first and last name start with g's I have a 6g phone.

Or if you really want to get people going change the email signature to.

I'm minded to suggest that anyone that easily confused doesn't need such a camera...

why no G14?

Same reason as to why there is no G13, just different language/culture.

The 3D was supposed to be a mini 1D, 1D AF system and fast enough to use for sports and wildlife if need be, decent weather sealing.... oh wait, they put the D before the 3 and a five before the D.... :)
