I don't know about the creativity part but 3 Einsteins, silver beauty dish from head side, 39 octa with grid from butt side and a gridded 8inch reflector from camera side. All at full power.

I was thinking the same. I believe he wanted to light the background but that could have been accomplished with a few Speedlites
