70D review from the Digital Picture

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-70D.aspx (external link)

Thanks Will. I'm not looking to upgrade away from my 60D but I like to learn about other models and see comparisons between models. This is the most informative review of the 70D I've seen so far. Mind you, I don't go looking for them; I only read those linked on here or that cross my path while browsing etc.
This review is also informative for people to learn the nuts & bolts of camera features and how the technology achieves it.

I haven't finished the whole article yet. It is a long read but that is a PLUS to a tech head like me.

I felt like selling my SL1 and macro lens to fund a 70D body. hmmm. do you think it's worth it? i can live without a macro lens actually since i have auto extension tubes.

keyan help. hehe

aside from the bells and whistles of the 70D, i like how it's has very similar buttons are with my 5D. less difference when switching bodies.

You don't want my "help". I am an upgrade enabler.

The camera is sick. It does everything well. The dual pixel AF is just as advertised - it just works well. The viewfinder AF locks in and tracks very well (I have never used a 5D3 before to compare), the wifi is really cool (direct flickr uploads and wireless liveview).

Everything about it is a refinement and enhancement of the 60D, to me it's the perfect blend of features to price.

I'm not even going to kid myself I want a wifi enabled camera bad. I think the live view from my phone would be epic for night photography and light painting. I just can't justify it though. :(

reaching into the way back machine here's a shot I took with my old SX20is. I obviously didn't know crap about framing and HDR was probably a bit much but it reminds me of happier days in my life when my income was double and my stress load was half. I got to watch the sunset over the lake every day and life was good.

Keyan, how does the video AF work with non STM lenses. let's say the 17-55?

Vinz what do your cameras not do that you think a 70d is going to do for you?
It's a serious question as I really can't see what you gain, shoot with what you have save your money then buy one of the top lenses that you said you want, that will really give you a visible improvement.

I'm still reading the review but I took a 70D for a test drive today.

I went directly into AI Servo using the center Zone AF array tracking moving objects.

There are nine AF square points in the center Zone. When you half-press the shutter - whatever the "auto"-Focus system thinks is worthy of focusing within the 9 squares - it does.

However as subjects moved inside the Zone - the squares did not move - as you would expect they would as a subject jumps in the group square to square. I suspect I'm not making sense   :p ... but my trial was disappointing.

Using the center point in AI Servo was a no brainer and while I suspect Digic5+ helps it have faster response time, I'm sure its quite similar to the 60D center focus point.

There is a slight ergonomic difference between the 70D & 60D but both are very similar. Buttons are arranged well, and moving dials and wheels feel different than on the 60D but not in any negative way.

I'll again try that center Zone for AI Servo soon and look in the menu for any means of customizing it. But I was surprised the AF squares (points) inside the Zone in AI Servo did not ever move when tracking a moving subject.

Edit: substituted the word Zone for Group above

pauly,

i also love doing videos and i think the 70D will serve me more better in that area.

i think my 50mm and 70-200 for my ff are more than enough for my portrait needs.

then i will trade back my 17-55 to 24-105. since i like using flash, i realized F4 is not a problem.

thanks though. i totally understand your point.

Brian is very impressed with the 70D's AI Servo and mentions it at least equal to the 7D, despite not have the AF point expansion mode.

That Is The First Encouraging News I've Read For Shooting Birds In Flight! :D

Bryan mainly uses center point for action.

I saw a video 70D review where he briefly tried his 24-105L and he liked its AF performance just fine, although I suspect it is not as quiet as STMs.

Use an external mic and problem solved
