Hi Jon welcome I have a 7 by 5 ft pop up background I sometimes use for what you want to do its great as its portable and folds away really small also it's black on one side and white on the other so you get two backgrounds plus train. Have a look at karlu photographic as that's where mine came from about £100.
Only downside is they are not really big enough for family group shots so maybe have a look at paper rolls they are about £45.

Paul, Rick, top men, thanks. I will have a look at the website you recommend. I suspected a 5 x 7 ft wouldn't be big enough for a group shot, if need be i could probably tidy up in post for the odd occasion when the white background doesn't cover the whole frame. Decisions decisions!

Can't wait to hear your thoughts. Keyan seems to be really enjoying his. Hah.

Non-photography related, my nexus 7 should be coming in tomorrow. Primarily will be used for school as I don't like lugging my laptop for minimal use.

I'm interested in using the display with my camera.

I'd love to hear if that works well. I might get a nexus 7.

Thanks Keyan. For non STM is it only a noise issue or slower focusing than STM lenses?

I think with the STM stepping motors is that they do not make the quick jerky focus hunting movements (using the appropriate body) versus USM, etc

I'm thinking 70D and 18-55 STM in the spring... 18 will be my wide until I can afford a 17-40 one day, and 55mm is plenty fine for any videos I want to do

The 40 STM is not a silent drive. It's noisy enough to get picked up in video. If you want a video lens, get the 18-55 kit when you are looking at the 70D....

non-silent 40 hotcake is like the last straw... its going up for sale aside from liking the 10mm wider vs the 50mm, it was mainly an impulse buy a yr ago...

The Ring USM (note the RING, not a micro motor like the 70-300 or the 50 1.4), are faster than STM to focus. But they are not a variable speed or silent, so they aren't as smooth for video. That said, the video from it looks great.

I was looking those a yr ago and typical reviews of the cheaper ones looked "light" grey on one side, and 'dark' grey on the other.

I ended up getting a white collapsible 5x7. I'd get bigger if I had the room - so it could be back further from your subjects so you don't see wrinkles in the white, which is typical, unless you have a portable steamer...

Yes that's the problem with them, I mainly use mine for small kids if I do shoots at clients houses also its great for head and shoulder shots. Here is a link to show you what I use, these are great as they don't crease.
