Canon EF 35mm f/2

If you had no other lenses, I would go with the 35 F2 if you think you'll need the extra stop of light and for it being smaller. If not, then the zoom would be more flexible for the wide angle to short telephoto. Just my two cents.. I prefer the 35 F2 for my walk-around lens and don't mind walking to get closer or farther from my subject. And I do a lot of available light photography. If you plan on using a flash, then the zoom may be more versatile as well.

+1 - If you shoot a lot of available light, then get the prime. If not, the Tamron is a good option. Keep in mind that the Tammy is a bit soft wide open - certainly the 35 f2 is going to be sharper at 2.8 than the Tammy. Both are quality lenses, though. It just depends on your needs and style.

Hmm.. at this rate you may want to start a new thread in which you list all your current and possible future lenses. That way you can get better answers and everyone can pitch in (since this a 35F2 thread).

35 f2 and 85 1.8 is a great combo. (see my sig )

I rarely use this lens and yet i don't know why. It is the perfect size to carry in my pocket when I have taking the 70-200 f/4 on a day trip when you know you might need to go wider but don't want to lug a lot of gear/bags

I'm considering selling my Sigma 1.4 and buying Canon's 35 f2.0 and 85 1.8. I love my Sigma but it's so heavy and I want to have a 35mm walk around lens and I know this little beauty is tiny and light compared to my Sigma.

Those of you who have experienced both any advice ? Thanks!

I have not used both, but I don't think you'll enjoy the 35 f2 (non-IS) as much as the sigma 35. I'd either keep it or go with the 40 2.8 and 85 1.8. You lose the one stop (vs the 35 f2), buy you gain overall more sharpness, quiet and more accurate focus, as well as having an truly compact setup.

I do have the 35 F2 and you're right, it's light and compact. I do enjoy using it, no doubt.

I considered the 40mm pancake but I've read that the lens is terrible past f8(to f22)

I sold my Samyang 35mm f1.4 (which I loved the results from, just not the MF, size and weight) and got a 35mm f2. After briefly using the 35mm f2 I realised that it doesn't do continuous AF in AI Servo which I wanted, so I returned it. IQ was great though and the AF noise didn't bother me - AF was fast and accurate. To me the new 35mm f2 IS USM seems like a good compromise between an f1.4 lens and the old 35mm f2. Still somewhat small and relatively lightweight, but with significant advancements over the older lens. I also own the 85mm f1.8 and think a 35mm/85mm combo is a great way to go (on full frame at least)

I have never used the sigma but own the canon 35 f2 and love it with my 60d as everyday lens. It is lightweight and discrete and I can carry my camera always with me. I also have the 85 f1.8 and, yes, it's a great combo. This summer I went on holiday with these two primes and left my 17-55 at home (it was kind of an experiment): it's been good to travel light and be able to take some shots at dusk, or even at night, without pushing the iso up. Sometimes I have missed a wide lens and had to use photostitch to cope...
