Hi - I'm Christy - I live in Chelan. There is a Raptor Migration counting station not far from town. Last weekend was Hawkfest - staged at the park on the Columbia River in Pateros. Two raptor rescue organizations had some not-releasable "education" birds on display:

IMAGE: http://svizzerams.smugmug.com/Hawkfest-2013/i-f7LgTP9/0/L/IMG_4052-L.jpg

Then took a shuttle up to the counting station and had a chance to see some of the birds caught for banding and then released to continue on the migration. Two Sharp-shins, one Cooper's Hawk and this little Merlin were caught and released while I was there:

More info can be found here:

www.hawkcount.org (external link) (two counting stations in WA - this one is Chelan Ridge)

I plan to return over the next several weeks to observe some more, although there is only one organized weekend, visitors are welcome anytime. Hope to head over to Othello for the fall return of the Sandhill Cranes in October :-)

Finally going on hikes in WA after 2 years of living in Seattle!

Goals are to visit Mt. Rainier and/or see wildlife sometime in the next month or so. :) Any recommendations on which trails of the park are best this time of year? 10 miles-ish roundtrip is pretty much hiking limit.

Nice shots! I've started getting out more and exploring the Cascade Trails. I highly recommend these three, which aren't Mt Rainer - but farther east:

1. Maple Pass Loop: off North Cascades Highway at Rainy Pass (Get there early, with your Forest Service pass with you for the car, the parking lot fills up fast). Beautiful hike and the Tamarack/Larch will be turning yellow in the next couple of weeks. 7.2 miles round trip

2. Alpine Lakes Wilderness, Ingalls Lake, off Teanaway (near Cle Elum): Moderate difficulty toward the end when clamboring on slippery serpentine to get to the lake. Watch out for overly friendly mountain goats that see humans as sources of salty goodness. 9-10 miles round trip.

3. Hart's Pass to Grasshopper Pass from Mazama in the Methow Valley. Nice vistas. This a small section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Went a couple of weeks ago, and a couple of sections of the trail were heavily damaged by the recent torrential rain storms, but were still navigable. Fairly flat trail (not a lot of vertical gain)but starts up high - so many pretty views. 10 miles round trip.

I bought all three books about day hikes of the Cascades (North, Central and South). We live in the midst of most excellent hiking. http://www.amazon.com …kes+of+the+North+Cascades (external link) Great series.

Also check out Washington Trails Association website: www.wta.org (external link) Excellent information and a lot of photos of what you might see.

I'd post up some pics - but I had my Panasonic Lumix ZS20 with me on the hikes. So many

While I'm not thrilled with the background (been seeing WAY too many of those dark gray things lately), I love the capture - the way that the sunlight caught Vista House is great. Nice shot.
