I heard this lens is actually quite soft, from people who used it. Is it true? Is it worth selling my Sigma 30 1.4 for this?

Ugh, I got another copy of this lens after a long month+ wait. It still has the same issues. This one is at least fixable, or so it seems. If I do +5 MA on the 35mm end, it'll be sharp as nails, but then the 18mm end needs -5 MA. My last copy didn't seem to care what the MA was set to, it just focused wherever. I think I'm just going to save myself the headache and buy the USB dock.

That doesn't seem like much adjustment, my Canon's are further out than that. haha.

Yeah, makes a HUGE difference though. If I were to compare it to something it's like the difference between f/1.8 and f/4.0 on the nifty fifty. My 50mm f/1.4 (Canon) needs +15 MA. The only problem like I said is that it's not consistent across the entire range of zoom on the 18-35. I'm going to try a local shop tomorrow and see if they carry and USB docks.

OH! I forgot the older bodies can't set both. I am going to have to get used to that. UGG!

EDIT - fiddling with mine, it seems to be off about the same (+5 at 35mm). But also it is different at 18mm. I guess I will have to get the dock, too!

Was so excited to finally be able to use this baby at a hockey game today and they wouldn't let me in with it because it was too long :(. I havent had too many excuses to break it out yet, been busy.

Just curious, what game? Is this NHL or local farm team? Does the arena or team have a physical length and focal length limit? This lens is just under 5" long, and for example my local college football stadium has a limit of 5" long lens, or 50mm (which is weird, do they really check FL ranges? And many P&Ss have far longer effective FLs than that...)

Well I got the dock and it's still inconsistent. I'm about ready to give up on this lens and Sigma all together.

Sadly, I returned mine too. AF was "correct" about 30% of time
I did not try the dock though.

Strange, mine seems to focus consistently. I used it in low light, and bright light, and going through the results I don't see any inconsistency. It is a teeny bit off, but ALWAYS that much off. haha.

I dunno, maybe I am too forgiving, or maybe I just don't expect all my lenses to be as sharp as my 100 2.8! :D

Sigma recommends me send it to them so I'm going to try that. If it doesn't work, I'm definitely not going to get anything by Sigma again.
