I've only ever seen a blue-headed vireo a few times. And earlier this fall, I had a chance to photograph one and totally flubbed the shot. Surprisingly, one showed up in this afternoon's wave of migrants. At first, I could only see his head; then, he posed for me in regal style and in natural light.

Thank you all kindly. I see the red-eyed vireo here all summer, but seeing one of these is a real treat.

Natural light, you say? Amazing - I don't know how you do it, Al!

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Thank you so much. This perch is, at certain times of the day, well illuminated by the sun, whereas the somewhat distant background remains in shadow. And now you know all my secrets.

You are too modest! The bird does like it is posing for you, with that coy "looking back over the shoulder" pose.
