Jeevz, is there a chance you could re-post your custom filter solution images?

I just cut the long petals of my hood today...

I used a hose clamp around the hood as guidance and just used a mini hacksaw. Put a lens cloth over the front element and lots of masking tape to 'weatherproof it'

I'm happy with the outcome - now with my d.i.y filter holder the filters sit almost right up against the front element.

I'll try get out with it later this week to see how it fares in the field :)

A few recent night shots from me. This lens is about to get a serious workout over the next few weeks!

Thanks for the comments guys! Up next is the Bristlecone Pine forest and Eastern Sierra's :) I should be able to find some nice dark skies to play with.

Terrific shots, Rick. It's wonderful to see what this lens can do in the hands of somebody who knows how to use it!

I am so not worthy of this lens (when I say I haven't a clue as to what to do with it I am not joking). I'm thinking of returning it and getting a plain old 17-40 instead.

How come Levina?

Well you know, I am a bird photographer and have only started branching out just a bit last year. So I am used to long glass and seeing the world through 14mm is very different. I thought it would be cool to get an ultra wide angle lens for the occasional landscapes and cityscapes and sunsets and so on. Problem is that I live in the city and 14mm is so wide that a sunset e.g. will get lost in the picture, as with this lens I will shoot half the city! I basically need to be very close to something to make this lens work. I mean, it's not a lens to "get everything in" so to speak, right? Unless maybe when you're shooting the Milky Way or some beautiful sunset over the Pacific. In the city there aren't really many wide vistas.
And maybe this lens is so wide that it kind of needs a bit of a specialized eye which I don't have. Not right now anyway. And so I'm thinking that maybe a more traditional zoom range will be better for me for now. I can then experiment a bit, get more familiar with a wider angle etc. Yesterday I dusted off my old 40D and the Tamron 17-50 and took them out for a spin and that did work better. It's just more manageable. Does that make sense at all?

Yep, it definitely does. I'm in the city as well and it's hard to catch sunsets or landscapes. Here's one I took an hour back or so though.
