I realize this is a risky request since I'm posting from work and don't have a decent monitor to verify my pics are in focus, but comments and suggestions are appreciated. ;D

Pics from second game (I missed the first game due to work schedule);

My computer screen at work really sucks so if I'm choosing the wrong pics please forgive me.

The bad thing about 400 F2.8 is that as action gets closer to the endzone I have to back up a small hill to get everything in the frame and loose that low perspective;

Settings were F2.8 400mm 1/640 and ISO 6400 on my Canon 5DIII. I normally use dual 600 flashes with my 70-200, but when using the 400 the flashes are kinda moot so I didn't use them; I may use them for tonights game....

They all look too cool to me. They were taken with the 400 2.8? A big portion of them look pretty soft.

Jeremy,

The first set was with a 70-200 F2.8 and the second set was with a 400 F2.8. They might all be soft........I'm back at work today and there's nothing sharp on these monitors. ;)

My pics from last night (Not uploaded yet), are ALL soft; for some reason I opted to shoot 1/800 and had to use 12,800 ISO. Shoot and learn! Last night was my last game this year shooting the 400mm and I'm looking forward to my 70-200 and flashes!

I know what it's like to need ISO 12,800 @ 1/800th. That takes some baaad lighting. lol.

Are you using a noise reducer? There is very little detail in these photos.

Jeremy,

Dim, uneven, and the color changes from brown / yellow hue to white depending on the light cycle. Most of the time half of each picture is a different hue....:o

xchangx,

No noise reduction; just dew rising from the turf tends to cause a light mist in the air. It heats up all day then just before dark the sun drops behind a hill and combine that with very moist woodland surroundings it's an ideal environment for moss to grow; and moss covers one end of the field. The temperature changes from Hot WV style muggy to cool and damp in a matter of minutes.

In the sample photos above I also may have missed the focal point. I use center focus then crop to the action I want to show and may have hit on something other than the subject. At F2.8 there's not a lot of room for error and the error results in soft focus.

Again I can't defend the particular photos above simply because my monitor here at work sucks. I've been working nearly every day (12 hour shifts with an hour drive each way) since Aug 1 and on game days I work 8 hours (7-3). Obviously my sports pics are NOT work related ;)

It is a lot to ask, but if folks will click on the flickr link and check out the full sets and report back what needs to change I'd really appreciate it.

Burnett44,

I'll give that a try for this weeks games.

I'm at home now and on my monitor it's obvious I didn't choose decent pics to share.

BTW, I downloaded LR5 and used it this past week and can't really make a call yet as to whether it's better or not because I don't like ANY of my pics. I caught some decent action, but there wasn't enough light. I'll redo them one of these days with increased black and see if they are any better.

Burnett44,

Thank you. I'm gonna crop tighter next time and spend more time tweaking the color.

Much appreciated. :)
