at some point in 2012 you could find it for $1199 and I think quite briefly for $1099...

that was a bizarre time... got mine soon after it was released on sale for $1499 +tx

Fave lens and hope its a long long lasting relationship

This would be a tough thread to look at if I didn't already own the 70-300L. I got mine from Amazon at the end of 2012 for $1099. An unexpected surprise is that the lens does extremely well in "macro" mode for close-up photography. Further, image quality doesn't seem to deteriorate when I stop down the lens. I find this very useful for flower photography where I need a small aperture for depth of field.

I shot these at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. I used f/11 for both, but probably should have stopped down to f/16 or f/22. The first one, indoors, was at ISO 3200; the second, outdoors, was at ISO 100. I processed both RAW images with DxO 8.3.1 using default 60D parameters. I added some contrast and brightness for the indoor shot using Paint Shop Pro X5, and used the same software for slight cropping and size-reduction.

Hmm i actually paid 950 swiss francs (about 1000$ i think) brand new. Something goes wrong with your prices

if someone "today" can get this lens for 950 swiss francs/$1043 USD - that is Excellent!

however, one of the best prices in the United States "today" is $1199

I like how this lens will focus in AI Servo not only at a moving subject coming quickly towards you (as any good lens like the 15-85 or 24-105L easily can) - but also beginning zoomed in and gradually zooming 'out' as the subject nears... that is technology...

I'm also fond of the bokeh we can get, the first below is at 160mm f/5
2nd is 146mm @ f/4.5
