I don't think most consider Ken a real authority, although he's probably right in this case. However, ALL the Canon zooms in this range are really awesome. I had the cheapest, smallest and lightest, the 70-200 F4 non-IS, and it was really VERY sharp as well. All have great color and contrast. I know you are worried about weight. If you are mostly going to shoot outside, I would recommend the F4-IS. It's also famously sharp, and considerably lighter.

I really like my F4 IS. I've had it for many years before getting the 2.8 II. I usually sell equivalent lenses after upgrading but it sharp and light. Kept it for a travel zoom. You can get nice bokeh at F4.
