The 580EXII users manual indicates as follows (ETTL mode):

...Turn dial to set flash coverage.
...If <M> is not displayed, the coverage will be set automatically

M is not display but only dashed lines indicated (_ _ mm). Is this correct or should there be a value for 24mm indicated or am i doing something wrong?

Also states that when connected to a compatible camera little rectangle box appears which I do not have.

Posted in light forum as well.

Thanks Kent

There are some points to be checked:
-Is your flash in a normal position? Not upright!
-Is your flash set as Autozoom
-Is the connection with the camera correct? In the settingsmenu the function ZoomAUTO must be set!
-Are the contactpoints clean?
I think this covers most of it and it should work. If not one must considder a technical malfunction.
Best of luck.
Greetings,

It's the first item in that list. The flash hasn't locked in the straight ahead position. It's either turned or tilted, or maybe both.
If it's not, then there's a malfunction with the switch in the flash, which senses that it's set to point straight forward.
