Unpaid, then no rental unless you have anything else you might want to use that lens for.

Well the event came and went. Overall the event was ok. It was outside, the weather was bad, and the people who were coordinating it did a terrible job of helping it run smoothly. I ended up not renting, and I'm SO HAPPY I DIDN'T. The even was in a different spot than I originally thought, and it required a much wider lens than the 70-200. I used mainly my 17-50, but the 85 was used some too. Here are a few of my favorites.

Thanks for the advice. If you would've read the previous post you would see the event was completed and I in fact did not rent anything.

Hey everyone. I have an event coming up that I will be the photog for. It's a favor for a friend so it's unpaid. It's a Halloween event at a local dogpark, midday with (hopefully, pending the weather) plenty of natural light. I was thinking at first about renting a 70-200 2.8 IS II, but now am leaning towards just using my 85 1.8 prime and a fisheye. (This is where I'm missing my magic drainpipe :)) I've shot at this place a couple times before and think that the 85 will be fine. It is a big area but I think zooming with my feet will be ok. The main factor is that it's unpaid, and I don't want to spend much, if anything, to do this favor. What would you do POTN?

Kinda of in the same boat, friend asked me to shoot his event and I was pondering renting an xtra body, but, my mentor suggested that what I had was good enough. That as soon as you mention compensation for your services, they would just find someone else to do it "free" was the convincing words for me NOT to rent anything. Go w/ what you got

70-200 is great for events. Not everyone likes their picture taken and with this you can snipe.

I agree, that is why I was going with it. However, Im glad i did not because there was wasn't enough space to even use my 85 prime. i went with the 17-50 most of the time. 70-200 would've been a waste of money :)
