I have a 7D and 1D mkIIn. Looking to upgrade camera. Any downsides to the 5D mkIII with sports? What I see looks pretty darn good. I will not be able to afford a 400 2.8 but may think about getting a 400 f5.6. Currently have a 70-200 f2.8 and a 300 f4. Shoot U-16 girls and will be shooting night games in the spring.
If your mainly looking for improved night time shooting, I'd probably pass on the 400 5.6. Great lens, but I wouldn't dare use it for a night game. A 300 2.8 lens would be my recommendation (Canon or Sigma variety) but not sure if that's in your budget or not.
I really enjoy the 5d3 for sports. Ya the burst is kind of slow, but if anything it has helped me work on improving my timing. It's also nice to be able to go up to insane ISO's and still be able to get the shot. In all honestly, though, the 7d (and 1d IIn during the day) are no slouch for sports cameras, so I'd think hard about upgrading lenses before upgrading the body.
