Some great shots. Are mouthguards mandatory? Haven't ever seen that level of wear in soccer.

I believe here in Maine they are only required for Football, Field and Ice Hockey. But they are officially 'recommended' for soccer so I believe most coaches / ADs require their school's athletes to wear them.

Very nice series of soccer images. I had to double take when I first noticed the red hand prints on the faces.

Thanks...Alan

I believe all of these were shot with a 5d3 and the 400 2.8. I had a 1d3 with a 70-200 as well, but I guess none of the images made the cut. I actually will switch the 1d3 with the 5d3 for a lot of guys soccer games because I enjoy the faster burst rate.

That being said, I am always amazed at the aggressive crops you can pull from the 5d3 + a sharp lens. Granted, I shoot for a paper so I can cheat quite a bit compared to people who need higher quality / bigger prints. Here is an example of how I cropped #1 from above (which was my most aggressive crop out of this set)

I have a 7D and 1D mkIIn. Looking to upgrade camera. Any downsides to the 5D mkIII with sports? What I see looks pretty darn good. I will not be able to afford a 400 2.8 but may think about getting a 400 f5.6. Currently have a 70-200 f2.8 and a 300 f4. Shoot U-16 girls and will be shooting night games in the spring.

Loving the last two. Must be nice to be able to crop that heavily!

All I can say is wow, such sharp pics with so much cropping.

If your mainly looking for improved night time shooting, I'd probably pass on the 400 5.6. Great lens, but I wouldn't dare use it for a night game. A 300 2.8 lens would be my recommendation (Canon or Sigma variety) but not sure if that's in your budget or not.

I really enjoy the 5d3 for sports. Ya the burst is kind of slow, but if anything it has helped me work on improving my timing. It's also nice to be able to go up to insane ISO's and still be able to get the shot. In all honestly, though, the 7d (and 1d IIn during the day) are no slouch for sports cameras, so I'd think hard about upgrading lenses before upgrading the body.

Great set Michael, and the IQ is fantastic for such aggressive crops!
