How do you trade your items.

I have a possible trade but the owner says he will not ship his lens til he receives my lens. I said what about we ship at the same time or if i ship, you place a deposit down for me to hold until I know you have received my lens and shipped the other one out. Thoughts

Is he on this forum? Do you or him have decent feedback available to see on here? Or have any way to prove trustworthiness other than face value? Most of the time the one with the better feedback has more leverage in how they decide to trade

I haven't traded for fear that I won't get the item that should be coming to me. If the other person is waiting for your lens to arrive, I'd be suspicious unless he is a really established member here.

Just sell the items to each other for the same price.

Don't use "Gift" payments if you have any concerns about the condition of the item or the seller / buyers trustworthiness.

You only trade with someone who you are comfortable with, if you are not comfortable or they can't make you comfortable, it's best to pass on the trade.

I do trades often but I would not ship first unless the other party has substantially larger number of feedback ( I only do trade with people I dealed before and who has quite a bit feedback). If you are talking about a trade with the person who replied to this thread, forget about shipping first, I would not do the trade at all. It is not about being honest or legit, etc... He simply does not have history here to even consider asking you ship first.

• Always go with your gut
• Always use PP (not gift) just to know you're pretty much covered.
• How long have they been a member and how many posts do they have?
• Look into the sellers history such as the conversations they've had with others, "Find More Posts by usersnamehere" Are they jerks? Helpful? etc...
• If they say that they've sold or bought items here, follow up on that and check it out.
• If they have an Ebay account check out their Feedback
• If you have any doubts wait for another deal.

I've never Traded here, but have purchased quite a few items from some great members. I've always had good dealings, except one when I sold to a non-POTN member.

Just my 2¢

Thanks everyone for all the input.....I guess I offended the person wishing to make a trade.....even though this topic was started while we were actually talking about doing the trade....just so I could get some insight from others.....now I'm glad I did......thanks everyone for your help.

Yeah I like the buy for buy which is technically the same but we both would be covered still. Thanks again everyone.

You don't do businesses with anyone you are not comfortable with. Too much hassle otherwise.

I have deleted posts that amounted to public negotiations, which we do not allow. I have also deleted posts that quoted deleted posts.

Carry on.

I've traded Guitars a couple times, and generally the idea is, I wouldn't do the trade unless we both trusted each other. If that test is passed neither of us have any reason to not go ship it right away. Then we PM tracking info. And inform the other when the item arrives. Pretty boring really. But it requires 2 way complete trust. A lot of things can influence that trust, like pictures of the item, history on the board, feedback etc. But if you still feel you need to take precautions to mitigate risk, I don't think you should be doing the trade at all. It's kinda all or nothing.

That said once I worked out a trade for a set of pickups but I wanted to play my set at one last gig. So I did get his before shipping mine but because of the trust, aided by open communication he didn't have a problem with this, and we were both happy with the results.

I've done trades for camera gear and video game stuff. I've even done 3 ways trades (this saves on shipping for all parties). Obviously, when it comes to money, whoever is sending money, sends first and than seller ships. When it comes to trades, you have 2 options. Person with lowest amount of feedback or reference, ships first. Or, you both ship at the same time with tracking and insurance and provide the information to each other.

The more reference the better. It could be from POTN, FM or eBay. Because someone could be new to the site and hasn't done much transactions but is a long time seller/buyer elsewhere. We all started somewhere. On FM, I have 27 feedbacks. On POTN, I have about 8. Videogame sites, I have a few hundred and on eBay, I have over 1270.

But if someone has minimal feedbacks or references from other sites and still insists that you send first, I would be hesitant. Granted, they don't want to get ripped off but they're at the bottom of the totem pole and need to work their way up.

I'll repeat what others have said. Trades, like any other transaction on here are about trust.

A couple years ago I was doing a trade. We had agreed to mail our lenses out to each other. The day it was going to happen I end up in the hospital for several days. I get a text from him saying he's sending it out anyway since he doesn't make it to the post office very often and he had scheduled it into his day. I sent mine out as soon as I got out.

If we hadn't had the trust I can bet you the other guy NEVER would have sent out the lens as I can bet my communication sounded like preemptive excuses.

Either way, we got our lenses and we were both happy.
