The first set looks a little soft but the portrait looks about right at 1.2. ( at least to my eyes). If you are pixel peeping this lens you will never be happy.

I wasn't meaning for it to be a way out.

if I buy a lens and it's not sharp out of the box, I micro adjust it if need be. I don't assume a lens will work perfectly.

There's no information as to whether the buyer has micro adjust capability...whether or not he's just simply not using the lens correctly, etc.

The photos posted by the OP show this lens is soft...too soft.

The lens is okay. It could be sharper as mine is a bit sharper but that looks okay to me..

Thank you guys for responding with different views. I am speaking to the buyer regarding this and he has himself said that he wants to compare it to his 1.4 and will get back to me by tomorrow morning to let me know if he wants to keep it.

I do think that this lens might have issues though if some people are saying that close up shots shouldn't be that soft.

Sorry, but I don't think you could've picked a worse test subject than a bunch of highly reflective spangles at MFD.

[Later: didn't see page 3 before I posted. Your lens seems ok to me based on the later photos.]

then he should test the 50L at f/1.4 as well, since testing his 1.4 at f/1.2 is going to be a bit difficult ;-)a

I have never (:cry:) put my hands on a beauty like this, but, as far as I know:

1 - even though this lens is a bit soft wide-open, it shouldn't be so soft like the photos you sent;
2 - this ^^^ doesn't mean this particular lens is soft. It could just be that this lens on your camera (and on the buyers) needs calibration. Have you ever took it to Canon to check it with your camera?
3 - it can also be that the lens is miss focusing in MFD but focusing right/better when the distance to subject it a bit more (like the girl photo).

I'd receive the lens, refund the guy and keep it :)

If I were the buyer, I would be seriously dissapointed, considering its a $1000+ lens. I don't own 1.2L, however I have several 50mm lenses. Even my $50 pentax 55/1.8 or Canon 50/1.4 is way way sharper than the images mentioned here. The only good image of the set is the sweet child's portrait, and then its more because of the child and her dress than the lens itself. OP may upload few images with manual focus and ISO-100, just to confirm.

Comparing his 1.4 lens with the 1.2 won't mean anything.
The 1.4 can be calibrated with his body and the 1.2 not. ;)
