I have never (:cry
put my hands on a beauty like this, but, as far as I know:
1 - even though this lens is a bit soft wide-open, it shouldn't be so soft like the photos you sent;
2 - this ^^^ doesn't mean this particular lens is soft. It could just be that this lens on your camera (and on the buyers) needs calibration. Have you ever took it to Canon to check it with your camera?
3 - it can also be that the lens is miss focusing in MFD but focusing right/better when the distance to subject it a bit more (like the girl photo). I'd receive the lens, refund the guy and keep it
Forgot another thing: And learn how to use it.
From what I've read, this is not a "linear" lens, you have to know how to use it right.
It doesn't behave wide open like it behaves stopped down 2 or 3 stops and it doesn't behave when focusing close like it behaves when focusing further away. But when one know how it behaves, I guess it behaves just wonderful!
