I've been kicking around picking up a 5d3 for my real estate photography business because, when it initially came out, I read some posts/reviews saying the in-camera HDR wasn't half-bad. Wondering how many of you have used it and wanted to get your thoughts on how good/bad it is.

Thanks.

Not that this addresses quality but probably worth reading. http://learn.usa.canon.com …d3_hdr_capabilities.shtml (external link)

I have played with the HDR feature a little, and not been impressed with the in-camera rendering. The best thing about the feature on the 5D3 is that it saves the three original RAW exposures so you can combine them with an HDR application. Of course, you can accomplish the same thing using exposure bracketing.

I found that Canon's DPP software, using its HDR feature, gives more options for getting a good result from the original RAW files.

Here is probably the best shot I've taken with the 5d3's HDR. I rarely use it anymore.

As with anything "in-camera", you can achieve better results out of camera. If using the HDR in camera you might as well shoot Jpeg to take advantage of sharpening and other things.

+1 to what ratjack said. Used it a couple of times but wasn't overly impressed. It is easy because it is automated but you can do better in post.

I don't need perfection. I'm looking at things which may help speed up my workflow. If it gets it close, I'm good with it--especially if I can tweak it enough to make it useable. I'm not talking about $500+ jobs here, talking about $100-$150 jobs for them to post on the MLS. So, as long as the colors are right and the windows aren't blown, that's about all they require.

I tried it one night... got haloing on all my shots. Tried different modes too!
Not impressed, save for the convenience factor.

I've also only played around with. I found it can do a good job but you have to pick the proper settings before you take the shot so you might not get it just how you want it. Since it does save the RAW bracketed shots you can always go back and re-do the HDR in your program of choice if you're not happy with in camera results.

IMO, it can save some time as long as you choose the right settings to get the type of results you want. If it doesn't give what you want or even if say you thought you wanted a realistic look but later decided that an over the top HDR is what you want you still have the bracketed shots to use. Just taking bracketed shots in the first place will ensure you get exactly what you want but you're guaranteed to have to put some work in post.

For your use I think it will work well. If you are shooting a house on a full sunlit day from inside or out you will get a pretty decent shot right in the camera. Nothing you will want to blow out into a large print but doesn't sound like that is what you are after anyway. I have used it a bit in my 5D III and was pretty impressed with what it can do without a lot of effort. I usually am making prints with my work though so that is when I tend to go more into doing these things in Photoshop.

In-camera jpg processing isn't half-bad.

But, is it good enough for you is the question. Only you can answer that.
