Amsterdam is good but The Reeperbahn in Hamburg is better, not that I would know of course , though I do a good story about a mud wrestling club, a group of Para's and audience participation there.

Does anyone know about these 'False Widows' that seem to be on the attack in the UK?

This one i found in the house a couple of months ago. I picked it up and placed it in the bath to use as a lightbox. It was quite large actually.

Yes, they are venomous so you should be very careful in case you were to get a bad reaction from a bite. Never pick them up.

I saved this link from the Natural History Museum website a couple of years ago which gives details of the spider.

I hope you didnt pick it up with your hands! If you did, you were very lucky not to get bitten - it is recommended that you never pick them up but move them using a card and jar.

Phew lol.

Mind you, there is a tiny fly that is just as vicious. Last Saturday a small fly nipped me 2 times on my left leg and once on my right leg in my garden. I felt a slight nip and saw it and flicked it off. I wasn't too concerned as it was so small but took an antihistamine all the same as I react to bites. On Sunday morning the 2 on my left leg were enormous, then at 7pm they started blistering. By the time I went to bed the blisters were like maltesers full of liquid. Went to docs on Monday got antibiotics and she popped them. The worst one continued blistering over the following day. I am still having to dress them and they are disgusting to look at. The liquid that doesn't ooze out rapidly turns to puss. I may have to go back Monday as the worst one is still tender and hideous to look at and my strong antibiotics finish tomorrow.

The reaction compares with a fly called Blandford Fly - google it and you will see how bad the resulting blisters are. This fly could well be that or a vicious cousin. They really are very small.

So the point of all that is that although the UK has a couple of nasty biters we know about there are still some that we should fear just as much. These should also be put in the limelight to make people more aware of much smaller dangerous things. So be very cautious with that particular spider.
