First time poster in 40D section - borrowed a friend's to try with the Sigma 300/2.8 +1.4TC to check before buying a crop body. C&Cs welcome.
Nice set there, what did you think of the 40D? Gets miniscually noisy from ISO1000 but still very usuable
Since getting the 5Dc I learnt that the newer bodies were full of gimmicks and didn't really offer much - I know that you'd probably need a 7D/70D to get a better level of noise management. I doubt the 50D or 60D are significantly better. I like the continuous drive, that 6fps is great. It was pretty overcast, so I was walking the line on shutter speed for an effective 672mm lens - great to fire off 4-6 shots at a time. I can thank the great Ken Rockwell for that tip - blur is random, even when your shutter is too slow, taking multiple shots is a good way of getting a sharp one in there somewhere.
I think the noise is perfectly palatable. I was concerned about pushing the ISO but had little choice. I think it affected sharpness, and I had to do some blanket NR in DPP, but apart from that, the files seem to tolerate some abuse. Most were shot 2/3rds under to keep the shutter up.

UKmitch86 - Some excellent captures there! Impressed that they are as good as they are considering the somewhat high ISO. If you decide on a 40D I'm sure you will enjoy it and will be looking forward to more shots from you.
It's a shame I'm leaning on the 50D side, only due to MFA - I've never had it before, but with this particular lens, the front focusing reports are pretty common. I've still got the friend's 40D so should really tripod it up and see how it fares when stopped down and how accurate at wide aperture.
