Help me choose 1DIII vs 70D

I am torn between these two though I would prefer the 1DIV I can't afford it. I will mainly use it for 80% sports/action and 20% portrait.

1d3 sounds like your better bet.
its faster by 3fps and very solidly built.
Its a sports camera and the 1.3 crop does will with portraits too.

the 70d is a nice camera but for your needs the 1d3 seems to be the choice to me.

1d mark III. trust me. i was using a 7D until last week when i upgraded to the 1d mk3. absolutely love it. i shoot sports and some portraits. so happy with it.

This is kind of an odd one to me. The cameras are really different. What are you hoping to accomplish? Is there something about the 70D that you would use?

This thread- should I get a 2007 BMW X5 with 212,000 miles or a 2014 Scion tC? This guy wants to know should he get an old camera- that was the best when it was made, or should he get the newest model out there.

The 1d3 is a great camera. However, I would get the 70d. This especially makes sense of you crop. What is your longest lens? yes, the 1d3 beats the 7d. However, the 70d has sharper pics out of the camera and has more resolution. Add the video enhancements and it is solidly better than the 1d3. The only thing better on the 1d is drive speed and sealing. Although timing usually beats drive speed.

I had a 7D and a 1D3 until I traded the 7D in for a 70D. I've also now sold the 1D3 as I've not used it since I got the 70D. The 70D is the best 'crop' body I've owned (550D, 650D, 60D 2x7D's and a 70D) or used and that includes the 1D3 a it's a 1.3 crop. I've not even got to the video functions yet and I'm sure I'll be even more happy with it when I do. The 1D3 is a great camera but the tech is getting old compared to the new releases and add a battery grip to the 70D and it's similar in size and still a bit lighter as well.

If you want AF for video and Liveview..or think there is a need for the wifi remote shutter, then the 70D might be for you. It is a great camera. Obviously the 1D3 is a great camera too.

Update: Well looks like my choice was given to me. The Mark III was eyeing on has been sold.

Doesn't matter. If you're shooting sports and would like your pictures to be in focus, 1D.

Get Magic Lantern for the T3i and video will be a happy place.

I have a T2i and 1D3, and I really love the combination. T2i when I need to video or just want to get a couple snaps. 1D3 when the images are going to be more meaningful to me or someone else. The 1D3 bumped my keeper rate an incredible amount for sports.

mmmm... I can see the better resolution here, but the 70d is not any sharper to my eye:
