I wonder how it will fare against the Zeiss 55/1.4.

Why 58mm?

Sounds sweet though. I'm sure it's better than the 50L.

IMO, Nikon should put out at least one f/1.2 to compete with Canon.

I wanted to know that too, is it because a slightly longer focal length gives shallower dof?

I think it's because a slightly longer lens is easier to design when optimizing for sharpness across the entire frame. Historically several ultra-fast 50s have been 58mm...the Noct-Nikkor and Minolta f/1.2 come to mind.

Sample photos from Nikon France:

To be honest, it doesn't look all that sharp at f/1.4 or f/2 judging by those portraits, but maybe it's just the processing.

indeed.. well to be fair canon 1.2 is not the one to be all happy about as well. Compared to the new zeiss...this is a shameful performance :D well it is $1700 vs $4000

It actually looks like a few of their samples are misfocused...especially the landscape. If not, then the lens is really soft wide open.

EDIT: might even be softer than the 50L

yeah... this is a bit worrying. As Charlie mentioned it does look a lot like 1.2

I'm gonna avoid this lens for now. :) I've already preordered the Zeiss 55 1.4.
