This link has probably been noted before, but I have a mac and this link,http://www.twam.info …s-7d-shuttercount-on-os-x (external link), explains how you can get an accurate shutter count on Unix-like systems using terminal. I've used it several times to get the shutter count on my 5D Mark III and it's free.

Thanks SandyLP... I tried those steps but couldn't get gPhoto2 to work. I think the problem was I didn't have x-code installed properly. I resorted to Magic Lantern to read the shutter count on my 5D3.

think it might work with the 40D someday? I'd love to know the shutter count on mine. Might install it anyway, to track my 5D3 count, great to have a simple solution for the mac, if it works. Had to use my stone old PC to count the shutters on my refurb 5D3 when I got it. only 6 clicks :-)

40D, 5D3, a bunch of lenses and other things

Hi All,

I hope you don't take as a spam, but I do think we have a solution for you to read Canons' shutter actuations: ShutterCount, our brand new app for OS X.

ShutterCount displays the number of shutter actuations (the shutter count) of Canon EOS digital cameras and is developed for Mac users.

The app supports:
1D X
5D Mark II
5D Mark III
6D
7D
60D
70D
100D / Rebel SL1
600D / Rebel T3i / Kiss X5
650D / Rebel T4i / Kiss X6i
700D / Rebel T5i
1100D / Rebel T3 / Kiss X50

For more info: http://www.direstudio.com/shuttercount (external link)

Feedbacks are very welcome!

Cheers,
Agnes

Worked with my 5D3...

No more messing around with Mac Terminal.

Thanks!

Edit:

I haven't hooked up my 50D yet... there's lots of 50Ds out there that need support!

Actually we are working on more Canon cameras, but I cannot promise anything. If you have any ideas, feedback or you would recommend Canon camera(s) to be supported, please, drop me an email (info at direstudio dot com).

Shutter count for 1D MkIII would be great!

So far, I read about 12 pages of this thread but I can't find a program that would work with 70D. Can someone don't mind to mention it (again)? Thanks.

Haha. I like your attitude. Just shoot the dam thing until it craps out or you sell it.

Yeah but when you sell, buyers want to know the shutter count. I know I do and the person that is buying my 5D2 today wanted to know also.

http://eoscount.com (external link) now fully supports EOS 6D, EOS 70D, and all the latest EOS cameras on both Windows and Mac. The Windows version now also supports Windows 8.0 and 8.1.

A reminder: EOSCount, unlike some other programs that pop up, uses Canon SDK to retrieve a shutter count from a camera. This is the same method that Canon uses in their technical centers and is the most trustworthy. Just because a program gives you a number and labels it "shutter count" it does not mean it is accurate. Even if a program not using Canon's method is accurate in some instances, it cannot be relied on to be accurate 100% of the time.

Caveat emptor: you get what you pay for.

By the time your shutter is worn you'll probably want an upgrade anyway. Since cameras became digital, they are subject to Moore's law. Image sensors improve over time as does autofocus etc.
