Just happy with how things work out sometimes and just want to post about it. That's all.

Bear with me here.

Here’s how it worked out. I sold some equipment that I either no longer used or needed, which netted me enough to purchase the lens, however, yesterday, I was on the phone with my credit card company about redeeming some reward mileage for a hotel stay and the rep told me that I could upgrade to their new cash reward program (uh, ooh something fishy right). She stated that I had 134,781 reward miles (built up over years of not using them) that would convert to $1,348.71 under the new program; well that got my chops wet. Nevertheless, I put on my accountant hat, did some research and asked lots of questions. To make a long story short, I converted and took the cash. I was off to get the lens (list price $1,999 after $300 rebate, plus 4% cash reward). Man, I thought that was a good deal until I came across a thread on here and FM talking about the lens was selling for $1,699, after rebate, plus 4% reward, but the deal had just ended; I got sick (not literally, but you know what I mean) – dammm I said. Me being me and not giving up, I called an online retailer (10/25) to inquire about the deal and bam, I got the deal, $1,699 after rebate, plus 4% cash reward. The lens will be home Monday. I hope I have no issues with the rebate, since I got the lens outside the sell date. Just think. I was willing to pay full price, but now I should get it for $600 less, with very little cash outlay. Whoooohoooooweeeeeeyeaahhhhbaby.

Here’s the breakdown:

$1,699 (after rebate)
$1,384 (cash reward)
$ 314 bottom line price

If I add in the $80 cash back reward, the lens cost me $234. I know it’s not cash in hand, but it’s less cash out of the hand.

May I ask which retailer you called and how you were able to get the deal? I am definitely interested in this...

Yep and I didn't really know what I had, so that was even more of a shock. I basically never really check on it. I know some other rewards program try and cancel or force you to use them within a certain time.

134,781 reward*points!
I bet you spent a lot to get that many reward points!

The most I have accumulated was maybe around 70k and that was mostly when i had to fly international unusually many times or you are the type who always swiping your cc adn racking points.

These days I don't bother with reward points. Certainly nice that its there but I don't purposely go after it. For me, its just too time consuming.

But contrats to you for those who has the descipline to make it happen!

Probably did spend a lot over many, many, many years, trips here and there, plus you get those bonuses here and there thrown in, but I never kept track of them. I use my CC for all purchases, that way I have recourse if something goes sideways, plus they give an additional 1 yr. warranty on purchased items. If a credit card does not offer me anything in addition to the use of the card, it will not have my name on it.

I have one CC that I use and I'm discipline at paying the CC , so no big deal - everything I have I own, except the house of course. I use the card for convenience and insurance as stated above, but the cash is always in the account to cover the charges.

Btw, I'm not sure why accumulating bonus miles or cash rewards would be time consuming when there's no input required on your part - when you use the card, it automatically accumulates the points.

Nice. I thought this was going to be one of those "too good to be true" threads where the buyer ends up getting scammed.

I also use a credit card for everything. I know a lot of people who don't and use debit only. As long as I pay them off every month there's no interest, and they don't have any annual fees. The way I see it, the extra warranty, cashback, and reward points are just free bonuses.

Cool story, but probably does not have general applicability.

That said, however, I convert all my credit card points into frequent flyer miles, which is pretty awesome for getting into business class. Not sure my credit card has a cash reward program, but I rather suspect if it did the equivalent cash value would probably be poorer than mileage redemption, but I guess YMMV.

congrats, but you kinda paid retail price not $314
CC rewards are basically cash. Worth even more than cash if you can use them as miles.
