What is the general opinion about the sharpness at F2.8 on this lens?

I bought a new copy a couple of years back for my 5d1. As far as I remember it was tack sharp wide open in center at most focals, with very little noticable improvement when stopping down. I was dumb enough to swap this lens for a 16-35 since it saw little use back then. Today i have bought another copy of this lens, actually I have two at the moment. They perform pretty equal, but I keep comparing to my first. They are indeed usable wide open, but when peeking at details they both see noticable improvement when closing in the aperture. I use a 1ds2 today, which require a bit more sharpening in pp, this might be some of the explanation.

What is your experience with wide open performance?

I sent mine into Canon for calibration under the one year warranty and saw an improvment in sharpness. No questions asked by Canon.

Hi Dabert,

just a question, are you using different exposure to come up with this style?
