bidkev,

What a nice photograph of the mother and child.

I love using my 70-300L for close-up shots of flowers as well.

This lens looks amazing shooting outdoors with lots of natural light.

How does it handle being indoors? Or maybe in situations where light isn't as abundant?

Thanks!

It has a variable maximum aperture of f/4-5.6, but has 4 stops of image stabilization. Therefore, it depends on what you shoot indoors. If you want it for indoor sports where flash is not an option, I would look at a different combination, perhaps an f/2.8 zoom on a crop body for extra reach. If you want to shoot stationary objects like exhibits at a fair, then the IS should be sufficient to give you a usable image.

However, this lens shines when shooting outdoors. It's a great wildlife, travel or general purpose lens. I use it a lot when travelling and love how compact and lightweight it is considering the zoom range and the quality of the glass.

The fact that it's a variable aperture lens was my reason for questioning it's indoor ability.

It's the extra reach that I love so much about this lens. If it was a 70-300 f/4L, I'd be all over it. I guess it's just that light loss at the long end that I'm worried about if I was in questionable lighting. That's all.

I don't feel it's fair to compare this to the 70-200 2.8L IS II, because of the aperture and it's ability to shoot indoors. Obviously at the cost of weight and your wallet.

I love to be able to have a versatile zoom, that's all.

Hmmmmm.

Thought I'd post a few pics from the races a while back.

The first two are random candids, the last four are friends.

Lovely butterfly shot mc.

Monkey - excellent candids.

Jalal - indoors is not a question that needs to be asked by someone using a 5D3.

Haha, I know it's not fair to compare the 70-200 2.8L IS II to this lens. But 2 stops is 2 stops! And indoors that's killer.

2.8 indoors is no killer. I use 2.8 or even 1.4 lens indoors and eventually end up at f4 or smaller due to the really shallow depth of field. A corresponding increase in the ISO fixes the exposure issues. On a zoom that gets even thinner.

At similar apertures and focal lengths I personally cannot see any IQ differences to warrant the weight and cost of the shorter lens.

The 70-200 2.8 II is a stellar lens. I agree with you that a 70-300/f4 would be awesome but they came out with the 200-400 f4 instead. :)
