Ok, well, I went into my yard to run some test shots. So far, not blown away. First, I have a focus ring where infinity is a bit past infinity. I tried the 5.6 @ 1.2 meters which has been suggested many times. That doesn't work at all. I suspect the dial being off means it would be closer to 2? It looks the "best" around 2 to 3, but doesn't look "tack sharp" like other shots I have seen on this forum.

So here is a test series of the lens SOOC. All shot on tripod, ball head, Canon 1d Mark IIII with 2 second self timer and ISO 400. Shutter speed was 1/800 on AV mode.

The series is 5.6 @ 1.0, 1.2, 2.0, 3.0, Infinity (meters), Beyond Infinity and then two attempts with live view on the Mark III. Live View is much better on the Canon 7D but I don't want to buy this lens and put on 1.6 body.

No profile correction has been applied and I am please with the lack of distortion that I had sort of expected.

Would love comments. I don't see any "tack sharp" shots here or am I pixel peeping too much? I bought a Canon 600mm Version II a few weeks ago and I know tack sharp.

Here are the shots:

I wouldn't say it looked soft. It's hard to say. The markings on the focus ring are off on my copy as well. I think it's pretty typical. I took a silver marker to it for infinity.

You are also shooting in overcast which is low contrast lighting.

This. The light sucks. The "awesome" sharp shots you see here are mainly the bright light ones where you capture loads of detail. Why not spring for the Canon so you know you have the best?

The ones @1 and @1.2 look off to me, but I have to agree with Thomas that I can't see much wrong with the others.

As to what the sweet spot for this lens is... My first copy focused beyond infinity at the infinity mark and setting the focus ring at about 1.5 meters I found everything to be in focus. Unfortunately I had to return the lens because it was badly aligned (a consistently soft and smeared lower right corner).

Last week I picked up another one and the infinity mark on this copy is dead on accurate. But I also now have to set the distance ring somewhere between 2 and 3 meters to get everything in focus.

Just saying that not all copies of this lens behave the same...

Here's another headshot. His head is dangerously close to the corner. He's got a bit of conehead going on.

So it appears Rokinon just released a new version of this lens, same optics apparently, just different, more canon looking exterior.
