You will never know how deeply I resent the implication that I was handed my life. That I didn't earn what I have. And that somehow you have it much hard harder for what ever reason. Your post wreaks of the 'life owes me a living' attitude that has been running this country into the ground for 30 years.

No. That is not me. Yes I did grow up in a different time. It was a time where if you wanted something, you worked for it. You did not stand at the Government's door with your hand out crying about your situation. You actually did something about it. Which was usually work. We actually distrusted the Government, completely. I am a child of the 1960s. Question everything. Trust no-one. Look out for number one. Nobody else is going to.

Yes, I had a job. A good one. Do you want to know why? BECAUSE I WORKED TO GET QUALIFIED FOR IT. I did not expect to drop out of high school a functional illiterate and scoff at a job that paid beyond my skill level. I took the crappy job. I did it well. I got promoted. I was the first person in my family to attend college, let alone graduate. I paid for it myself. I have been working all my life. I expect that to continue. I retired in July, 2013. I expect to return to the workforce in the summer of 2016, in a new and exciting career. Why? Because I like working and the lifestyle it affords me.

Along the way I did things that would help me grow my future. I invested in property. Which is where I discovered the philosophy of letting someone else pay your bills for you. I buy property X, on credit. I rent propery X. Said renter is paying for that property for me. Nice. I get to own the property as it grows in value, and the rents increase. All I had to do was be willing to go into debt to get it in the first place. Now I own it and I did not pay for it. And the income allows me to buy other things with someone else's money.

I am not rich, by any means. My debt level is irrelevant because I am not paying my bills. Financial life is not about debt or assets. It is about cashflow. I don't have a job right now and that is irrelevant, too. I have the cashflow to support a nice home, 2 new cars, a nice Harley to run to the Post Office on. My wife quit working 2 years ago to go back to school. I started working on my new career 2 years ago. I quit working because it was the lowest paying thing was doing.

Lastly, I'd like to add that I am not frivolous. I have posted numerous times that I cannot afford this lens or that body. I try to envision a need, and a use, for something before I buy it. That said, life is way too short to spend it saving pennies you are going to give to a medical facility when you get old. I plan to let Medicaid pay my medical bills when I get old. Before you gloat about that, remember that I paid for Medicaid, too.

It is your money spend it. Wisely. OP, I repeat, BUY THE LENS.

"if you are living within your means you are a fool"
Consider me extremely foolish, and loving the fact that I never worry about money. :)
That said, I still bought my 24-70II on that double dip deal from Best Buy on 18month no interest financing. Seriously, I'll use other people's money for free knowing I can pay it off any time I want!

What can one get for $2000 that's more useful than a 24-70mm II. I tell you best $2000 I ever spent. The sharpness, the bokeh, colour, contrast. Everything about this lens is excellent.
Now my MacBook for the same money on the other hand thats probably going to need replacing in 4 years. Ugh.
It's just money and a good lens is probably the best way possible to spend it.

People like you destroyed the worlds economy! How damn difficult is it to save $2000. It ain't exactly a $200k Porche.

Given how sharp this zoom lens is, it's worth the money.
I can't think of another profession where the equipment can be sold for something close to what it was purchased at.

Now for something completely different. Check out the Tamron 24-70 VC it has IS. There are several threads on it here. I purchased mine with rebate at $999.00 which is about half the price of the Canon version without IS. Yes the Canon optics are slightly better but a $1000.00 better only you can make that call. I really like mine a lot.

200k porsches are more difficult to hide from my wife, unfortunately.
back on topic, I have a Tamron 24-70 VC here I'm testing next to my 24-70II. The 24-70 is plenty more responsive and better focusing in low light, and also, sharper. FYI

True to an extent. But then, most of us live in some form of debt. I know I have a car payment, mortgage payment and credit card bill every month, and I know I'm not the only one. All in all I have very low debt compared to most americans, especially people my age (25). I bought my 6D on a best buy credit card, so technically I'm in debt for it, but I did so because I got 18 month 0% interest financing. I only owe about a thousand now on the kit and am only halfway through my 18 months, so it'll be paid off easily within the 18 month period. So instead of saving for the camera for 18 months and shooting on my T2i, I've been able to shoot on a camera that I enjoy a lot more

No...be honest, you shoot with the camera that you cannot afford and drive the car you cannot afford.

right, i dont seriously see myself going in debt for it. I should have added the sarcasm emoji after my sentence...

but i do agree that we are all... in some kind of debt. Usually. I know 1 family that lives completely debt free.

because people want more than they really need.

Except that I can. If I couldn't afford it, I wouldn't have bought it. After all my bills I still have plenty of leftover money each month, I live well within my means and I do so with a big a** grin :D

You do not own this, you own fraction of it every month.

And? I drive it every day, I modify it, I wash it, I can do whatever I want to with it. My name is on the title. I drove my share of sub $5000 cars for years, paid cash for each. Then guess what happened? All of the sudden I tried to buy a house and realized I had no credit, so I bought a car. Now I have a car and a house. Welcome to the real world.

Do you rent? Do you drive a beater around that requires hundreds or thousands of dollars each month to fix? I'll take debt over pointless expenses any day.

I know that majority of people in US and now many other countries live like this. I do not try to make anything of it. As a person choice, I do not want it:-)

If you cannot get a 50.000 USD car it means you cannot afford it. I think living without debt will make you think differently. Some folks would indeed start with sub 5000 USD car and will be tired to repair....but it can lead you 2 different way: 1) get in debt or 2) think about changing something in life:-)

Anyways, it is becoming philosophical and it is a personal choice. The most important thing is the freedom:-) I will not give mine to anybody:-)

^When did I say I drove a $50k car? And you dodged my questions. Are you a renter? Do you drive a junker? Or did you have parents buy you your first nice car or do they let you stay at there residence? Without developing credit you'd absolutely have to rent at some point, is that not a "waste" of money? How is that freedom?

Not trying to bust on you, but your logic alludes me.

I've worked hard to be where I am in life, and considering I'm 25 without a college degree, I'd say I'm doing pretty darn OK for myself. (BTW, didn't go to college because I didn't want the endless debt, especially since I didn't know what to study in the first place ;))

No...I have my own apartment and I paid cash for my very good car. My parents cannot afford to help me.
