They aren't regularly. However recently privately owned heritage locos with mainline certificates have been hired in by freight operators. One of the Deltics (Class 55) was used recently by GBRf, and obviously now they're moved on to Westerns!

Wow, thanks for that - it seems really surprising. I don't suppose they'd do it if it didn't make commercial sense, but I'd think a modern loco would be cheaper. Still, it makes for interesting variety. I used to watch the Deltics shooting through Doncaster years ago.
