Looking at some of these images, I am really surprised this lens doesn't get more play.

I get it;

-build quality is poor
-it is slow
-it does not have IS

BUUUUTTTT....

It is cheap enough to get people started, especially as pointed out above when paired with a new body....

Maybe the Canon 50-250 is just a much better value?

Yes, that's exactly it. Without the EF-S 55-250 IS this lens would get a lot more interest from the budget-conscious crowd. It's still a good bargain for the EF-only folks (the FF bodies), but IMHO I think that for most people if they can afford a 5DII (the cheapest FF currently available "new") then they can afford the 70-200L f/4 non-IS at the least, or the 70-300 IS USM, so why bother with this entry-level piece of glass?

^Mine's definitely not that sharp! But I do think it generally gets a worse rep then it deserves... that said, am going to sell mine :lol:

I have this lens since I bought my EOS 300 film camera. Not very sharp, especially after 200mm, and needs very good light. I use it from time to time but I prefer manual prime telefocus lenses.

I use this lens while travelling. It is small and light with a broad zoom range
