I only have pics on my FB page so far, but these were all shot with the 24-70 f4: https://www.facebook.com …43.335879733151445&type=3 (external link)

It is a great lens, not one fault that I have noticed with it.

I'm looking at this one just because I don't want to drop all the coin on the 2.8II.. So far it looks really nice. I might end up doing this and a 70-200 f/4 version, and be happy.

I agree, kobeson's photos are great. I like to learn how to take these photos, capturing movements like in the "fencing" photo.

I got myself one for effectively 849 EUR yesterday evening and here are my observations so far based on a very quick indoor test compared to my 24-105.

Generally I don't feel any difference caused by the 70 gram less weight when mounted on a 70D, even when I just hold both the 24-70 and 24-105 without the camera body in my hands, I don't notice any difference in weight.

One nice thing though is that the IS on the new 24-70 is really silent. I even have to hold it close to my ear to check if the IS is actually working.

Focus speed is equal, but the focus sounds on the 24-70 are nicer :) also the AF/MF IS on/of buttons on the 24-70 are easier to use, although they look the same. While filming you will still hear the USM in the video of course.

Now, since it was already dark I had only a chance for a quick test which was done like this:

  • Fruit bowl on the table
  • Camera on tripod (distance approx. 50cm)
  • Manual mode, 250ms, ISO100
  • External Flash on
  • IS off on both lenses
  • AF on
  • Wired remote control

I've attached 100% views of 24 and 50mm with f4. But I noticed the same on f5.6 and f8 anyway:

At 50 mm the 24-70 is remarkably softer than the 24-105 which is really sharp. Even manually focussing with 10x magnification in live view I could not get the center focus point as sharp as I wanted.

Is it because I was working at a too close range? Is it due to physical limits? Should Canon have constructed the 24-70 as long as the 24-105 to bypass that physical limits? I am a beginner in this regard, so please bear with me if these are silly questions :)

Anyway, under the same conditions the photos of the 24-70 are always brighter which I really like. The next few days / weeks will tell if I will return the 24-70, sell the 24-105 or keep both.

Since I could only upload 2 attachments, here are the photos in original resolution out of cam, hope that is helpful:
