Is Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM much better than Tamron 17-50 non-VC (for Canon)?

I have a Canon EOS 60D and I need a General Purpose Lens for it, I have choosen a Tamron 17-50 non-VC.

Is Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM much better than Tamron 17-50 non-VC (for Canon)? If it is, I may sell Tamron 17-50 non-VC to purchase a Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM next year.

I guess the real question is what's wrong with your Tamron 17-50?

The 17-55's AF is stooopid fast. While I don't personally have a way to go about measuring it, I feel rather confident when I say that of all the lenses I own (or have tried), the 17-55 is the fastest at AF lock/acquisition.

But the 17-55 is not without its flaws, some of which include zoom creep and plasticky build (some people are really offended by this). So you just have to know what you're missing in your current gear and see if the 17-55 will fill that void.

I went from the Tamron VC version to the Canon, and the Canon lens, in my opinion and experience, is far superior than the Tamron. My Tamron had a hard time focusing, was loud, did not render colors like the Canon, and if the zoom lock was not on, the zoom creep was crazy. My copy of the Canon isn't too bad with zoom creep, you'd have to lightly force it to creep. Then again, it is a newer model (2011).

I also had the Tamron 17-50 non-VC, great lens for the money but it's AF is slower and noisier. I've taken some really nice shots with that lens. Didn't have any zoom creep with that lens.

Now that I have stepped up to the Canon 17-55 I find more of my shots are in focus but I didn't like the zoom creep (and no zoom lock) so I purchased a Lens Band to fix the problem. So the build quality is the only real complaint. The Canon is also noticeably larger and heavier but that doesn't bother me knowing I've got one of the best EF-S lenses available.

I saw that Sigma recently released a 17-70 F2.8-4, would like to try it and see how I like it but I doubt it will have better IQ than my Canon 17-55.

I actually went from the Sigma 17-70mm new version, to the Tamron VC, to the Canon.

To me, the Sigma had better image quality than the Tamron, but the Canon still blows it out of the water (anyone catch that pun haha?). Also, the Sigma is significantly smaller (to me, anyway), does not have full time manual and no internal focusing...so I had to make sure my hand wasn't on the focus ring...it was too cramped for me. Also, the Sigma had much more zoom creep than my Canon. In my experience, the Canon is far superior to both the Sigma and Tamron.

Thanks ejrj6586 for your input. I've had the Tamron (non-VC) and now I have the Canon but I was eying the Sigma. Seems anything other than the Canon will be a compromise on IQ, I'll be keeping my 17-55.
