Is owning a Canon Rebel a joke?

haven't read the whole thread here. This may have been covered in detail..

Use Magic lantern on my 550D (T2i). It is an awesome tool. Put the T2I on a tripod, set trap focus at the largest jump at esquirenen , equirenebt, horse events. Better than having a second shooter. The lowly rebel produces images that are absolutely stellar. Print the images as 13X19 all day and have never had a disappointed customer. Kinda hurts my feelings when the T2I all by itself produces better images than me with a 7D and 70-200 Tamron VC...There is no question that that the rebel line is very capable of making awesome images...

That made me laugh! I thought I was the only one using a setup like that! Shooting with a 7D and using a couple of T2I's with Magic Lantern to catch other stuff at racing events. And yeah...the Robot Rebels often get some top-notch images!

that's a really cool trick, too bad I have nothing to try that with.

You pretty much download it to your memory card. It doesn't touch the camera software. (Firmware)

You can also delete it from the card and go directly back to stock. Has many add-on features.

It's software that runs from your card(s) and piggybacks the OE firmware. The benefits are myriad. So much cool stuff. I originally started using it just for the focus aids on the somewhat rare occasions I shot video, but now I use the trap focus, the timelapse (with ramping), and a lot more. It's free, although I've donated several times.

I drive a Honda Civic, and I've often wondered what would happen if, just for fun, I bought a couple BMW emblems and put them on the car, along with some numbers.

Currently nobody compliments my car (not that I care), but I wonder if they would. Might be a good social experiment.

You could probably do the same with a camera. Maybe when my new 6D comes in I'll find an old Rebel sticker to put on it, kind of the opposite of my above example. Or maybe I'll peel off a Fisher Price sticker and put it on the camera.

Bottom line: Shoot with what you enjoy.

The magically magic lantern..

Magic lantern works with the Canon operating system, does not affect the Canon firmware, just runs in conjunction with the canon operation system.

The benefits:

Me, don't do a lot of video but if I did, ML gives me a whole bunch of features that I don't get with any Canon DSLR: includes follow focus, zebra,...no idea what those mean but if you do video worth looking into.

ML turns your rebel into a pro grade video machine..

for images I use ML primarily for:

Trap focus: tells the camera to take an image whenever something comes into focus.

Light shutter release, set the camera up during a storm and let the lowly rebel snap images whenever there is a flash of light. Have gotten some great lightning shots. You can also tell the camera to respond to sound, a wave of the hand in front of the IR sensor.

Just a couple of the things you can do with ML. An awesome application that I have just scratched the surface of...

Correct, or reformat the card, and turn off the tick to re-install magic lantern after formatting. (I forget what it's exact title is, but it's the only option there).

Magic lantern does not get installed on the camera - it's installed on the card, so removing it from the card puts your camera back to normal.

You can also boot up your camera in normal mode even with magic lantern on the card if you hold down a particular button if you just want a 'once off' non-ml bootup.

The only thing you need to do change on your actual camera is to allow card-boot.

Yeah, you can even just rename it on your card so you don't have to copy it again later.
