I took these photos with 5D Mark II + Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM and I feel these photos are flat. Are these photos truly flat? (click in photos to view on Flickr pages)

How to avoid flat images?

No, these images aren't flat in my opinion. When I first looked at them I thought they were taken with the 135mm f/2. The reason being that they are very sharp and have good separation.

Good work. Also that 85mm is a keeper.

It would have been nice to have the exif data in tact.

If by "flat" you meant a 2D look, they certainly don't look like that. Some EXIF plus your lighting arrangement might help the pros out here to critique them better.

I am not a pro but IMO, better uniformity/direction of lighting and lesser clutter behind and around the subjects (leaves, branches, chairs and other distractions) plus better composition would have certainly improved the outcome.

You could play with levels, curves, lighten shadows, add mistone contrast and a little saturation to see how they come out. Consider adding some vignetting too.
