Hey, don't let me dissuade you from returning for a re-shoot, but I like the tree. It grounds me, tells me where I am and gives me a better sense of what I'm looking at. Beautiful sharp shots !

Happy Trails !

Not to worry, it'll happen. About the moment of the first shutter click would be my guess ;).

Hey I see you have the 17-55 2 8, how does it do with video compared to the stm?

Canon 70D/70-200 f4/17-55 2.8/BG-E9/430EZ I like DSLR's. It makes a distinction between photo fans and normal people who don't give a damn how a picture could look like

I don't know for sure but probably noisy compared to the STM. You can't hear the STM at all.

The cropped sensor is great for macro as well. Gives you better DoF and allows you to fill the frame without getting too close...

Paul.

Nice one, what sort of Spider?

Yes, for AF in video the STM is much smoother to focus and practically silent. This came up recently ;)...

Cool. How do you think the 18-135 STM compares to it? Is there a big difference in IQ?

I think there is; to my mind it's apparent in the subtleties - clarity in high detail areas. In terms of rendering, probably the short tele version of the 70-200 II. And the f/2.8 helps for subject isolation.
Hard to say really if it's a big increase in IQ or just a subjective difference that's appealing to me; but since I bought it, I've only used the 18-135 STM a couple of times (though that's what I reach for when doing video. The 17-55 is not quiet).
That said, between 55 and 135, the 18-135 has it beat ;).

I was told I wouldn't see any IQ going from 600D to 70D, but a number of my friends commented they saw an immediate improvement, and mostly this was from Facebook images :-)

I think colour is different, not sure how, not good at evaluating, but looks nicer :-)

AF definitely faster, although I still have some difficulties with the nifty two fifty which are explainable in terms of the lens capabilities.

The extra size does make a difference if you need to crop too.

You'll LOVE it :-)

Agreed with all that, I found a difference moving from the 650D in overall IQ; and the AFMA features certainly helped me with that.
The AF performance is amazing, and the little conveniences of a slightly higher-end feature set are fun to play with - like being able to set different focus points or mode depending on camera orientation.
I love geeking out on all the options .

Nice one, what sort of Spider?

This is one of the spiders in my outhouse. Taken at an awkward angle, right up against the back corner, behind all kinds of typically stored stuff in the outhouse (trolleys, old cement bags and sand, plant pots and garden tools...) You can see the lacy/funnel structure of the spider's web - Tegenaria gigantica (external link) are more hunters than catchers (they wait for prey to enter the funnel rather than get caught on sticky strands) so their webs are less traps than domiciles...

Video looks great with the 17-55, but I agree about the noise. Best to use an off-camera mic.

yes. as long as its new. I believe Amazon gives 2% back in rewards, so that's about another $20 off.

B&h also has a rewards thing. Not sure how it works as I have never used it, but I just ordered mine from them

I picked up an 18-55 STM just for video vs the 17-55. The 17-55 is not quiet....but still a much better lens. If Canon made a silent smooth USM and put it into a gen II 17-55 it would be perfect.

It is nice though having a super lightweight option for video recording, and I got the lens white box for about $130.
