Is owning a Canon Rebel a joke?

Who paid 1500 for a 60D? Ha. J/K.....Again I think owning a rebel is not a joke, to each his own. Find what works for you and use it! And learn to use it to the best ability, then if you feel the need - upgrade

Who ever talk down a Rebel are quite possibly themselves, a joke. Not only that but also ignorant individuals with low self esteem issues.

How many point and shoot have the same image quality, the same support for lenses, the same support for flashes, the same frame rate, the same focus speed, the same ... ?

I'm very happy start photography with rebel T3, the cheapest one when I went to camera store. Because of the lower cost, I had extra budget to fund others lens when I found limitation of the kit lens. The T3 had the simplest layout to learn and after 30k shutter count I got, I review all the image exif data. I found out majority of image is at high ISO, so I know I need camera with better ISO performance than camera with better AF or fps is not so now upgrade to 6D.

I feeling regret to sell my T3....I always recommend beginner start with rebel than upgrade later.

His point is that if the user is shooting on nothing but auto, what he's doing is taking snapshots, and for that he doesn't need all of those features you're talking about. He'd be just as well served with a Gxx or similar if he wants the best camera for his type of photography. What real logic is there in lugging around a DSLR, even a Rebel, if that's all that interests you?

A person can do whatever he wants as far as I'm concerned, but someone buying a 1D just to us it on auto is mostly demonstrating a lack of understanding of what makes a photographer a photographer.

FWIW, Canon felt similarly, and there's no green box on 1D bodies. Closest is P... and I've set it there a couple times when handing the camera off to someone else in varying conditions, with my fingers crossed.

Sorry, but you will never convince me that there is any logic at all in buying a $3000 or higher camera for snapshots. For snapshots you simply don't need that performance, nor would you recognize whether it was there or not. That person is also going to to be happier with a built in 10x zoom than he will having to change lenses. We are simply talking about a different photographic mindset. Those things are important to you, so you have a camera which meets your needs.

If I gave your 5dII to my wife (or even my 60D), she would put it in auto mode and then **** every time she had to change the lens to get the magnification she wanted. Or she would accidentally hit a dial and change the active focus point, then get depressed when all of her photos were out of focus. Some cameras are simply not a fit for some people, and just buying the wrong one because you happen to have the money is nonsensical.

It would be awesome to see someone at a kids' soccer game green-boxing a T1i with a 400mm f/2.8L. They'd be getting the shots...

Nobody needs to convince you of anything since we all have the right to our own opinion. But you have no right judging those who wish to spend money on the higher quality camera and choose to use it differently than you feel they should. Just because they choose one mode or another does not make their purchase unnecessary, nor does it make them a less skilled or worse photographer than you are.

My opinion is of why someone would want to not be aware of and in control over the settings used for the photo. From ISO, aperture, shutter and focus, I simply prefer to make those setting for myself. I have an expensive light meter, but does using the camera meter make me any less of a photographer because I choose the automation of the built in meter? I also used to have a color meter, but does relying on the cameras auto ISO make me any less skilled? Pretty much the same as someone choosing the programmed modes and trusting them.

Your wife is just one case, I give all my old gear to my wife and it sits in a camera bag while she uses her cell phone camera. I guess any camera is a waste with her.

Why is the final result not the only thing that matters? I know for many the journey is the fun part, but for most people photography is about creating a memory, who cares how you take it, isnt the final result the most important part? Nobody on these forums sits there and goes "damn, look at that exif data, thats some good stuff right there" without looking at the photo first. We look at the exif data to see how they were able to get the image or at least a starting point to get the image.
